Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM2 OFFUTT (JAMES1 OFWOOD)1 was born Abt. 16701, and died Bef. June 10, 1734 in Prince George's County, Maryland. He married MARY BROCK1 Abt. 1694 in Prince George's County, Maryland, daughter of EDWARD BROCK. She was born Abt. 1678, and died Bef. September 11, 1748 in Prince George's County, Maryland. This researcher is working on a theory that William Offutt is a son of James Ofwood (probably from Suffolk County, England) who was transported into Maryland by Saumuel Withers in 1664.
William Offutt made his will on 10 November 1732, and it ws presented for probate on 10 June 1734 in Prince George's County. In it he gives to his wife Mary, their dwelling plantation and tracts belonging to it: Neighborhood, Gleaning and Gleanings Addition to her during her life, and after her death to their son Nathaniel. To son Edward he gave tract called Outlet, containing 600 acres, at Piney Branch, which fell into Potomac at Walter Evan's island. Also his youngest Negro at the time of his death. He indicates he has already provided for his sons William and James, and to his daughters Sarah, wife of Thomas Harria and Mary, wife of John Bowie Junr. To his son John, he gives 500 acres, of Calverton Edge, along breadth of tract called Addition. Sons John and Nathaniel to have a lot with its improvements in the town of Upper Marlboro. Nathaniel to also have the remainder of tracts Calverton Edge and Addition. Son Samuel to have Offutt's Pasture, on the east side of Edward's dwelling plantation. Youngest son Thomas to have Younger Brother, on Upper Falls of Potomac, north of Piney Branch, otherwise Watts BRanch. Daughter Jane Offutt to have Offutts Adventure 100 acres SW of Western Branch of Patuxent River and 80 pounds sterling on the day of her marriage. If any of my children, Samuel, Nathaniel, Thomas or Jane die without issue then their estate shall be enjoyed by the survivor of them. Although Nathaniel may not have attained age 21 at decease to have full rights; and Thomas to enjoy full rights to his labor at age 17 years. Nathaniel to have tract Covert in fork of Henson Branch. Sons Edward and Nathaniel to be executors, and friends John Beale son of Alexander and Mr. Ninian Magruder the Elder to be overseers thereof.
Mary Offutt's will was made 9 March 1747/8, and proved 11 September 1748 gave to sons Edward and Nathaniel each one slave; to sons James and Samuel each 5 pounds; to each child of deceased son William, also 5 pounds money; to each of the children of her deceased son John, deceased daughter Jane Warring; deceased daughter Mary Bowie, 5 shillings each; to her daughter Sarah Harris her clothing. Sons Edward and Nathaniel the remainder; son Nathaniel Offutt to be executor. Witnesses: Richard Burgess, John Brown, Braizer; Thomas Shreve.
